Family invite code doesn't work
If you got an invite code or invite email from a family group and the join attempt fails, there’s a short list of likely causes. Working through them in order resolves most cases.
Symptom: “Invite code not found”
You entered the code and got an “invalid code” error.
Likely causes:
1. Typo
Codes are 6 characters mixing letters and digits. Common confusion:
0(zero) vsO(letter O)1(one) vsI(letter I) vsl(lowercase L)5vsS8vsB
Ask the inviter to share the code via a clearer channel (text instead of voice; pasted instead of typed).
2. Code expired
Invite codes expire 7 days after generation. After that, the code returns “not found.”
Fix: ask the inviter to send a new code from their Family screen.
3. Code already used (single-use codes)
By default, codes are reusable (multiple people can use the same code). But the inviter can configure codes as single-use:
- If someone else used the code before you, it’s now consumed.
Fix: ask the inviter for a new code.
4. Inviter’s family group was deleted
If the family group was deleted between when the code was created and when you tried to use it, the code becomes invalid (the family no longer exists).
Fix: re-invite needs a new family group. Ask the inviter.
Symptom: code accepted but you’re not added to the family
You entered the code, saw the confirmation screen with the family name, tapped Confirm join, and… nothing happened? Or got a generic error?
Likely causes:
Family is at member limit
Family groups have a maximum size. If the family is at its limit, new joins fail.
Fix: the inviter needs to remove an existing member first (see Remove a member). Then re-try with a fresh code.
Network issue mid-join
Briefly offline during the join → request failed silently.
Fix: ensure you’re online, restart Forktastic, try again with the same code (it’s still valid until expiration).
You’re already a member
If you’re already in the family (maybe you joined and forgot), the join fails because you can’t double-join.
Check: Options → Family → look at your current memberships. If the inviter’s family is already there, you’re already in.
Symptom: email invite link doesn’t do anything
You tapped the Join now link in the invite email but nothing useful happened.
Likely causes:
Forktastic isn’t installed yet
The link tries to open the app. If you don’t have Forktastic:
- iOS: the link takes you to the App Store.
- Android: the link takes you to the Play Store.
- Web: the link opens
app.forktastic.com.
Install (or open the web app), sign up / sign in, and the join completes.
Wrong account signed in
The invite email was sent to your email, but if you’re currently signed into Forktastic with a different email, the join fails because the invite is tied to the specific email it was sent to.
Fix: sign out, then tap the email link again. Sign in with the email the invite was sent to.
Link expired
Email invite links expire after 14 days. After that, the link shows “expired.”
Fix: ask the inviter to resend.
Link already used
Email invites are single-use. Once you join via the link, it can’t be used again.
If you joined, then left the family, then try the link again → expired.
Fix: ask the inviter for a new email invite, or use a fresh code-based invite.
Symptom: you joined but don’t see any cookbooks
You’re in the family group, but the family section of your Cookbook tab is empty.
This is expected if the family creator hasn’t shared any cookbooks yet. Family membership doesn’t auto-share — the creator has to explicitly share specific cookbooks.
Fix: ask the family creator to share a cookbook (see Share cookbooks and recipes with family).
Or, if you’re a fellow Pro user, you can share your own cookbooks with the family — sharing is bidirectional.
Symptom: family screen says “You aren’t in any family group”
You joined recently but the Family screen shows the empty state.
Possible causes:
- You signed in to a different account. Check Options → Account settings for the correct email.
- The family creator removed you. Re-invitation needed.
- The family was deleted. Confirm with the creator.
