Switch theme (light / dark / system)
Forktastic supports a light theme, a dark theme, and an automatic option that follows your device’s system setting. The dark theme is the default if you have your device in dark mode.
Cook Mode has its own optional theme override — see Cook Mode large text and keep-awake.
Change theme
- Open the Options tab.
- Tap Account settings → Theme.
- Choose one:
- Light — always use light theme
- Dark — always use dark theme
- System — match your device’s setting (default)
The change is immediate, no restart needed.
What each theme looks like
Light theme:
- Background: white / very light gray
- Text: dark gray / near black
- Accent: deep cyan
- Cards and modals: white with soft shadows
Dark theme:
- Background: near-black (#171717)
- Text: white / light gray
- Accent: bright cyan
- Cards and modals: dark gray with subtle borders
Forktastic’s brand accent color stays cyan in both themes, with adjusted shade for proper contrast.
When System mode is useful
System mode (the default) means Forktastic matches whatever iOS or Android is showing. If you have iOS → Settings → Display & Brightness → Automatic (which switches dark at sunset, light at sunrise), Forktastic follows along.
This is the most natural setup for most users. The Forktastic-specific override is for cases where you specifically want one theme regardless of system.
Cook Mode theme
Cook Mode can override the app-level theme:
- Match app theme (default) — Cook Mode uses your selected app theme
- Always dark — Cook Mode is dark regardless of app theme. Useful in dim kitchens.
- Always light — Cook Mode is light regardless. Useful in bright daylight.
Configure in Options → Cook Mode settings → Theme.
Color contrast and accessibility
Both themes meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast standards for text on backgrounds. If you have specific accessibility needs:
- High contrast — supported via your OS’s accessibility settings; Forktastic picks up the higher-contrast color variants automatically when the OS flag is set.
- Inverted colors — also picked up from OS accessibility settings.
OLED black option
For OLED screens (iPhone 13+ Pro and later, modern Androids), Forktastic’s dark theme uses true black (#000000) backgrounds in key panels to take advantage of pixel-off energy savings.
You can disable this via Options → Account settings → Use true black. Some users find true black backgrounds harsher and prefer the standard near-black (#171717).
Theme on web
The web app at app.forktastic.com follows the same setting:
- If you signed in, your account’s theme preference applies.
- If you haven’t signed in (visitor view), the web defaults to System based on
prefers-color-scheme.
